Rural grants take two
In 2020, near the end of the Trump administration, SpaceX was temporarily given almost $900 million in government funding to help bring internet to rural areas. This money came from a program run by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) called the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF).
But in 2022, the FCC said SpaceX hadn’t clearly shown how it would meet the program’s goals. After SpaceX appealed the decision, the FCC still rejected the funding in 2023.
